4th February 2010

January has certainly arrived with the weather causing a lot of work for the Neighbourhood team. The snow fall meant that we were required to work to keep our community safe. Additionally a lot of complaints were received regarding snowballs being thrown to cause nuisance to residents. This is a common occurrence when the weather is bad however its effect is not diminished. Also I am sure we all heard in the news about children playing on ice which is very dangerous. Hopefully the weather will improve and this problem is not return for some time.

My colleague PCSO Tony Holland has formed a very successful Neighbourhood Panel for the Langney Point area. It was very well attended and I believe that this will be a strong panel working to try and resolve some of the long term issues that affect the area. We always welcome more people and so if you would like to get involved in your local Panel please get in touch.

We have continued to hold our street meetings throughout the area, please keep an eye out for your local one.

One success that we have had in the last month is the we had a speight of graffiti in the “Birds estate” area of Langney. It was clear a youth had walked through the estate with a can of blue spray paint drawing on anything they could find. I got in touch with each resident that had damage caused and offered to get the graffiti removed free of charge using one of the “graffiti removal kits” that we have. Enquiries continue on identifying the people responsible but this is a great example of us working to resolve not only crime, but environmental issues in the community.

As always, please get in touch if you have anything you would like us to look at.If you wish to become involved in your local Neighbourhood Panel please contact me via my contact details on the last page. The next Neighbourhood Panel meeting is Sovereign Harbour on 4th February at 7pm.

2nd January 2010

Firstly, may I wish all my readers a "Happy New Year".

In the last month, naturally, our focus has shifted toward keeping people safe whilst in busy shopping areas, and also promoting the anti drink-drive message. I personally worked with colleagues from the Roads Policing Department stopping all traffic on Pevensey Bay Road conducting drink/drive checks. Happily I can say that we did not catch anyone driving over the limit which shows that our efforts are having an impact, however we did succeed in stopping a vehicle with a very large amount of Class B drugs. The occupants were arrested and our investigations continue.

We have continued to hold our street meetings throughout the area, although they were not well attended given the weather and other pressures in the run up to Christmas.

I also supported colleagues during the traditionally busy times of Christmas Eve and New Years Eve. There were some serious incidents on both evenings however on the whole the large scale Police effort seemed to work well.

Finally, as we look forward to what 2010 will bring we have already planned meetings to bring us even closer with the community. Indeed this month will see efforts to build a stronger Neighbourhood Panel for Langney Point, along with numerous street meetings throughout the area.

As always, please get in touch if you have anything you would like us to look at.

3rd December 2009

November has been a busy time for each of us in the Neighbourhood Policing Team. We have met many residents in street meetings and at various other events.

We are supporting our colleagues from the Roads Policing Department in ensuring motorists stay safe during this party period. I, along with others, with be out and about late in the evening on our busiest roads to stop drivers and breath test them. This is our traditional Christmas drink drive campaign and I would urge everyone to stay safe, and not to drink if they will be driving. Every year many people are dealt with for this offence. Not only do you put yourself at risk but also everyone else on the road. Don't take the risk.

The other matter we will be focusing on is purse thefts whilst people are Christmas shopping in the town. Colleagues will be on both high visibility patrol, and plain clothes to try and catch the thieves in the act. Everyone should have a fun and enjoyable Christmas and theft of purses or presents can be particularly distressing. If you would like any advice on this matter please get in touch.

Lastly, you may of seen in the local newspaper the crime statistics for the Town. These are an excellent reduction in the number of victims of crime, and it is down to the hard work of not only the Police, but also of the local community. Of course, one crime is too many, and we will continue to drive down crime. 2009 has been an excellent year for all of us, and I very much hope 2010 will be an extension of this.

All that remains is for me to wish every a happy festive period

10th November 2009

Last month was a busy time for us on the Neighbourhood Policing Team. The highlight of the month was being able to work the Eastbourne Bonfire Society event on Eastbourne sea front. This event, the first for many years, was a complete success with thousands of local families coming along to enjoy the occasion. The fireworks were excellent, and everyone was talking about how family friendly the event was.

We have also been working hard on to resolve some of the criminal patterns which are occurring. The cycle thefts remain a problem with some very expensive bikes going missing. I stress again the need for everyone to be very aware of where they are storing their bike when at home and out.

I also executed a drugs warrants at a property on the Kingsmere estate. This was positive and could only happen with the support of the local residents who have supplied us with information over time. We continue to work within the community to target premises which are being used for inappropriate means. If you have any information for us please let us know.

Finally, the PCSO's have been working exceptionally hard delivering leaflets to every property in the area. These leaflets will give you more information about your local Policing team, along with useful contact numbers. If you haven't received one please get in touch.

1st October 2009

In the last month our focus has changed with the type of crimes that have been taking place.

For some reason cycle thefts have seen an increase in the last few weeks. This has either been from opportunist thefts of bikes left insecure on pavements or driveways, to shed breaks to steal more expensive bikes. The PCSO's in each area have been stopping passing cyclists and offering crime prevention advice, along with registering the bike on www.immobilise.com Please feel free to stop a passing Officer to ask for this service. Additionally an operation was organised focusing on one hotspot with a very large number of hours of both high visibility and plain clothes patrol. This has had a huge impact on this problem.

I have also been seeking further clarification from colleagues at East Sussex County Council over parking enforcement and procedure. This is following a continuing number of complaints from residents regarding parking problems in various places. In narrow terms, if double yellow lines exist in the area where the car is parked NCP will deal, if there are no double yellow lines then it is for the Police to act. If you need to speak with NCP their telephone number is 0845 680 1129.

4th September 2009

Last month is traditionally very busy for us with younger people on holiday from school. Thankfully however we have not had too many calls regarding anti-social behaviour.

PCSO Martin Hylands and I paid a visit to the RNLI Regatta at the Harbour last week which was great fun. Hundreds of local people were joining in with the event that was raising money for the Eastbourne Lifeboats. Congratulations to everyone involved on what was a great event.

Operation Blitz is continuing on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings tackling anti-social behaviour and underage drinking. We rely on hearing from residents and members of the public about incidents that are happening at the time so please feel free to call us about anything that is going on. Very often it is neighbourhood officers that staff this important operation and we are keen to do what we can to help.

I am very pleased to hear that the Kingsmere Open Spaces plans are moving forward, and residents have a good opportunity to have their say on what is being planned. Look out for the plans at the Kingsmere Fun Day on 12th September, or contact me for more details.

I would like to give a warning to all the irresponsible dog owners who live on the Harbour and do not clean up after there dogs. The Haven School children have been treading dog faeces into school as the pathway between Atlantic Drive and Wade Close is being used as a dog toilet.

This area is being monitored by our Neighbourhood Policing Team, The Dog Welfare Officer at Eastbourne Borough Council and many parents. We need your help and co-operation in identifying the culprits. If you are able to provide information about the offender the Dog Welfare Officer would be able to consider formal action.

The information needed is :

  • Name and address of the offender, where possible.
  • Description of the owner and the dog.
  • Day, date, time and location of the incident.

You can contact the Dog Welfare Officer on Tel 01323 415380.

Justice Seen Justice Done – Following on from the last Neighbourhood Panel meeting I have seen NSL issuing fixed penalty notices to a number of vehicles parked on double yellow lines in Pacific Drive.

Contact NSL on 0845 680 1129 or e-mail NSL

2nd January 2010

Unfortunately, over the Christmas period we have had two newly bought cycles stolen from the underground car park of Pacific Heights in the North Harbour. The secure car park doors where forced open and the two locked cycles stolen. I would like to ask all residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour of persons or vehicles especially vans and to note down the registration number and report to Police immediately.

Although we are having a large number of cycles stolen across the town we are also collecting up a great deal of reported found cycles too. If your cycles are registered with us it will improve your chances of getting it back if it is lost or stolen. You can register your cycles and other items for FREE at www.immobilise.com. All you will need is the frame number, make and model. It is also worth taking a clear, colour photograph of your cycle and make a written record of it’s description for your own records.

I would also like local residents who live opposite the waste ground between Pacific Drive and Pevensey Bay Road to know. The persons riding the 4 x mini motorbikes which where being ridden there on Monday 28/12/2010 at 11:20 hrs where stopped by local officers and appropriate advice given. I would like to thank the resident who reported this to us at the time. This residents supportive actions stopped other residents peace and quiet being disturbed and 4 x small children riding mini motorbikes in an unstable / dangerous area.

It may be the season of goodwill, but don’t make it a Happy Christmas for criminals by handing them your presents. Most house burglaries and thefts from vehicles are committed by opportunist thieves.

Make sure your house looks occupied – use time switches for lighting and close the curtains. Keep your home secure and store gifts out of sight until Christmas arrives. Be a good neighbour – report anything suspicious. Don’t leave goods and presents on view in your car. Park in busy and well lit locations when going into town. Empty boxes outside your house advertise valuables inside.

I would like to thank all the people who helped deliver the Neighbourhood Policing leaflet for me and wish all the Harbour residents and work force a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

To see the priorities for your local area and find out what's being done about them click on "local priorities" on the right.

Unfortunately, harbour residents are included in the growing number of bicycle thefts that are occurring across our town. I would like to ask all residents to report any suspicious behaviour straight away to us if a cycle is nearby. An example would be a stranger in your underground car park or a person hanging around near a cycle rack outside any of our shops.

Although we are having a large number of cycles stolen we are also collecting up a great deal of reported found cycles too.

5th October 2009

I would like to remind residents that with the nights closing in and the clocks due to change at the end of the month, leaving your home during hours of darkness without switching on lights or drawing the curtains, indicates to the opportunist criminal that no-one is at home.

I would also like to point out to the local dog owners that they are responsible for picking up their dogs mess. That means not only picking it up but placing it into a red bin or your own wheelie bin, if double bagged, and not just throwing the bag and it’s contents into the harbour. The volunteers who clean rubbish out of the harbour in there own free time have reported an increase of bagged dog messed floating around the whole of the harbour.

I have also had reports from the RNLI that dogs are being allowed to mess around their station and on the rough ground on the west side of the lock. When the lifeboat crew get a shout they often park at this location and run across the lock. They are feed up with treading dog mess into their emergency station. The crew risk their own lives to save others and this is totally unacceptable, so please report any person who commits an offence to our Dog Warden at www.eastbourne.gov.uk/dogs or Tel 01323 415380.
